Spring COVID‑19 Booster Vaccinations – What You Need to Know

The NHS is offering a Spring COVID‑19 booster vaccination to people who are at higher risk of becoming seriously unwell from COVID‑19. COVID‑19 has not gone away, and protection from previous vaccinations can reduce over time. The spring booster helps top up immunity and provides ongoing protection. [nhs.uk][gov.uk]

Who is eligible for a Spring COVID‑19 booster?

You may be offered a Spring COVID‑19 vaccination if you are in one of the following groups:

  • Adults aged 75 years and over (including anyone who turns 75 before 30 June 2026)
  • Residents of care homes for older adults
  • People aged 6 months to 74 years with a weakened immune system, due to a health condition or medical treatment (for example chemotherapy or immunosuppressive therapy)

Eligibility is based on national guidance from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI). If you are unsure whether you are eligible, please speak to your GP, specialist team, or pharmacist. [nhs.uk]

When is the Spring COVID‑19 booster available?

The Spring COVID‑19 vaccination programme runs from 13 April to 30 June 2026. People at highest risk, such as care home residents and housebound patients, will be prioritised. [england.nhs.uk]

Why is the Spring booster important?

Protection from COVID‑19 vaccines reduces over time, even if you have had COVID‑19 before or previous vaccine doses. Viruses also change, which means boosters are needed to maintain protection.

The Spring COVID‑19 booster can:

  • Reduce your risk of becoming seriously unwell
  • Help you recover more quickly if you do catch COVID‑19
  • Lower your chance of needing hospital care

How will I be invited?

If you are eligible, the NHS will contact you directly by text message, letter, or via the NHS App with details of how to book your vaccination. Please wait to be contacted before getting in touch with your GP practice.

Depending on local arrangements, you may be able to:

  • Book online via the NHS website or NHS App
  • Attend a local vaccination clinic or community pharmacy
  • Receive your vaccination at your care home (if applicable)

How long should I wait after my last COVID‑19 vaccine?

You are usually advised to leave around six months since your last COVID‑19 vaccination before having the spring booster, where possible.
